Flutter Entertainment is preparing to continue investing heavily in FanDuel beyond 2026, reinforcing its long-term commitment to strengthening the US sportsbook despite recent earnings pressure and a subdued market reaction.
During a discussion with Oppenheimer analyst Jed Kelly, CEO Peter Jackson and CFO Rob Coldrake outlined the strategic rationale behind the company’s previously announced $270 million investment programme, confirming that spending is expected to continue into 2027.
Coldrake said:
It’s sensible to assume that we continue investing into 2027, offering the clearest indication yet that Flutter views the initiative as a multi-year strategy rather than a one-off investment. The comments provide additional clarity after the company’s second-quarter earnings call, where management stopped short of committing to future spending beyond 2026.

Betting on Long-Term Growth Over Short-Term Margins

Flutter’s decision comes despite a challenging quarter for investors.
Although second-quarter revenue increased 3% year-on-year, outperforming analyst expectations, adjusted EBITDA declined 45%, while the company reported a net loss of $296 million. The results prompted an immediate market response, with Flutter’s shares falling around 11.5% following the earnings release.
Several investment banks, including Macquarie, Citigroup, Wedbush, and Oppenheimer, subsequently lowered their price targets, reflecting concerns over both compressed profitability and the scale of planned investment.
The announcement also coincided with confirmation that Jackson will step down as CEO in September, creating additional uncertainty as Flutter embarks on one of its largest strategic investment programmes in the US.

FanDuel’s Customer Momentum Supports the Strategy

Despite weaker financial results, Flutter argues that underlying customer metrics justify continued investment.
Jackson described the decision as “straightforward,” pointing to strong engagement across major sporting events despite operator-friendly outcomes proving elusive.
During the NBA Finals, FanDuel recorded 26% more active bettors than the previous year, while betting handle increased 40%.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup also delivered encouraging customer data. Of the 2.3 million users who wagered on the tournament through FanDuel, approximately one-third were previously inactive customers, suggesting the platform successfully reactivated a significant portion of its user base.
Rather than maximising short-term profitability, Flutter intends to capitalise on this renewed engagement by increasing average revenue per user and strengthening long-term customer value.

A Multi-Year Investment Thesis

According to Coldrake, the current spending cycle reflects Flutter’s conviction in the long-term potential of the US market rather than a permanent shift in capital allocation.
The company expects investment intensity to moderate over time as operational improvements translate into stronger margins.
Coldrake added:
We’re very confident about our longer-term margin trajectory, adding that the current strategy is intended to accelerate growth while customer momentum remains strong.Management believes there are multiple opportunities to improve profitability in future years, but sees the current market environment as the right time to prioritise investment over immediate earnings.

Leadership Transition Comes at a Critical Moment

The investment programme also coincides with a significant leadership transition.
Jackson confirmed that Dan Taylor, who will succeed him as Group CEO, has already played a central role in developing FanDuel’s sportsbook enhancement strategy.
Rather than viewing the leadership change as a disruption, Jackson suggested it provides Taylor with an opportunity to shape the next phase of Flutter’s US expansion from the outset.
With hundreds of millions of dollars earmarked for product development, technology, and customer growth, the incoming CEO will inherit one of the industry’s most ambitious investment programmes.

Flutter Prioritises Market Leadership

Flutter’s willingness to absorb short-term earnings pressure reflects a broader strategic calculation. As competition intensifies across the US sports betting market—and emerging products such as prediction markets reshape consumer behaviour—the company appears increasingly focused on defending and extending FanDuel’s leadership rather than optimising quarterly results.
Whether that strategy ultimately delivers stronger margins remains to be seen. What is already clear, however, is that Flutter views the coming two years as a pivotal investment cycle that will shape FanDuel’s competitive position for the remainder of the decade.
